Located at 1500m above sea level in the commune of Cauterets, it is the starting point of numerous hikes and walks such as the Gaube lake.

Brèche de Roland

Brèche de Roland.

Roland's Breach is an impressive natural gap, 40m across and 100m high, at an elevation of 2804 m in the Pyrenees on the border of Aragón, northern Spain, and Hautes-Pyrénées. According to the legend the breach was cut by Earl Roland, a nephew of Charlemagne.

This is the finest day walk in the Gavarnie area, indeed one of the finest in the whole Pyrenees.

The Pyrénées Animal Park

The animal park located in Argelès-Gazost , 5 km from the campsite, has been elected best animal/nature leisure site in France in 2016.

The park offers its visitors an itinerary through which you can enjoy nature and see animals in their habitats (hispanic goats, mouflons, bears, chamois, marmots, etc.), walking among red deer and much more.
The visitor will also learn about the flora to help them to distinguish the different kinds of trees: holm oaks, pine trees, oaks, holm oaks,...

Pibeste National Reserve

Pibeste National Reserve. Bird of prey observatory. The campsite is located at the foot of the bird of prey reserve.

At the entrance of the Gaves valley, this nature reserve will make you discover a particular heritage of the Pyrenees; steep limestone cliffs, rocky areas, sparse forest.

Thanks to a warm microclimate, here the Mediterranean-type plants grow incredibly well If you stay at Campsite le Rural, just look up and you will see vultures, falcons and other birds of prey flying.

Lourdes

Lourdes.

Lourdes attracts thousands of visitors every year, whether they are believers, atheists, or of another religion. Lourdes has a sanctuary, 3 basilicas and above all the Massabielle Cave where an incredible religious fervour and a recollection atmosphere reigns.

But Lourdes is also a medieval city with lovely small streets in the old town, a castle standing on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Marian city. Just walk around and discover some of its history and its high Pyrenean heritage.
